WASHINGTON ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Who Can Absentee Vote in Washington?

Any registered voter may opt to vote by absentee ballot.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

Anyone who is interested in voting absentee must apply in person, by telephone, or by mail at the county auditor or election office. Requests for absentee ballots will be accepted as early as 45 days before an election. (No absentee ballots are issued on election day except to hospitalized voters). The request for an absentee ballot must be made to the county auditor or elections department (not to the Secretary of State).
If applying by mail or fax for an absentee ballot, the letter of application typically must include:

- Applicant's printed name and written signature.
- Applicant's registered address and ballot mailing address.
- Applicant's voter registration number.

If applying by mail, a voter's request must be submitted no later than 10 days before the election. Telephone requests are frequently taken up to 7 days before the election. After that, a voter may apply in person up to the day before an election. Ballots are available approximately 20 days prior to each election.

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

The returned voted ballot must be postmarked or delivered to the county election officer on or before election day to be valid.

Other Information on Absentee Voting in Washington

A voter may also apply - in writing - to automatically receive an absentee ballot before each election. An absentee ballot request form must be sent to the county auditor or elections department (the "all future elections" option on the absentee ballot request form must be checked and the form must be signed by the applicant).
