Who Can Absentee Vote in Vermont?

A voter who expects to be an absent from his/her county on Election Day may opt to vote absentee.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

Those interested in voting absentee may apply for an absent voter ballot until 5:00 p.m. or the closing of the town clerk's office on the day preceding the election. An authorized person may also apply for an absentee ballot on behalf of the absent voter, but not later than 12:00 noon on the day preceding the election. All applications must be filed with the town clerk of the town in which the absent voter is registered to vote.

An absent voter, or an authorized family member acting in the voter's behalf, may apply for an absent voter ballot by telephone, in person or in writing ("Family member" refers to a person's spouse, children, brothers, sisters, parents, spouse's parents, grandparents, and spouse's grandparents. Any other authorized person may apply in writing or in person).

Any request for an absentee ballot should contain the following information:

- Applicant's name
- Applicant's address
- Applicant's signature

If the request is received by the town clerk not later than 17 days before the election (the 2nd Saturday preceding the election), the town clerk shall mail an absentee voter ballot to the applicant.

If a voter wishes to absentee vote in person, he/she may do so by registering and voting at the town clerk's office no later than 5:00 p.m. the day before the election.

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

Completed ballots must be returned to the town clerk before the polls close on election day in order to be counted.

Other Information on Absentee Voting in Vermont

An application for an absent voter ballot shall be valid for only one election, unless specific request is made by an absent voter that the application be valid for both a primary election, excluding a presidential primary, and the general election next following, as long as both ballots are to be mailed to the same address.

A person temporarily residing in a foreign country who is eligible to register to vote in Vermont, or a military service absentee voter who is eligible to register to vote in Vermont, may apply for absentee ballots in the same manner and within the same time limits that apply to all other individuals applying for an absentee ballot. An official federal postcard application shall suffice as a simultaneous request for an application and for an absentee ballot, when properly submitted.
