Who Can Absentee Vote in South Dakota?

Any registered voter may vote by absentee ballot if he/she:
1. Expects to be absent from the county on election day; or
2. Is disabled or ill; or
3. Is prohibited by his/her religion; or
4. Is prohibited by the nature and hours of his/her employment; or
5. Is away at school; or
6. Is in the service.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

Absentee ballots are available six weeks prior to the election. To receive a ballot by mail, the voter must file a written application for an absentee ballot with the county auditor. The application may be a letter and must contain the voter's voting precinct name or number, the reason for the request, and the election for which a ballot is requested. The voter must personally sign the application.

Voters who qualify to vote absentee may also go to the auditor's office, complete an application, and vote in the office. This should be done prior to election day. A voter who is sick or confined may request an absentee ballot in writing, naming an authorized messenger who will deliver the ballot to the voter.

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

The voter must sign a statement on the absentee ballot envelope prior to returning the ballot. All voted ballots must be returned to the auditor in time to be delivered to the appropriate polling place prior to the closing of the polls. No applications will be accepted after 3:00 p.m. on election day.
