NEW MEXICO ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Who Can Absentee Vote in New Mexico?
Any registered voter in New Mexico may vote absentee during the 40 day period prior to an
election. New Mexico offers absentee voting by mail as well as in-person absentee voting.
How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?
Those
interested in voting absentee must contact their county clerk for an absentee ballot application. Requests for applications may made either over the phone or by sending a written request to the county
clerk.
Applications for absentee ballots are available well in advance of the election, though the ballots will not be mailed out earlier than 40 days before Election Day.
Voters who
choose in-person absentee voting may do so at the county clerk's office beginning forty days before the election. The deadline for in-person absentee voting is the Saturday before the election. Voters
choosing in-person absentee voting may apply for an absentee ballot and vote that ballot during a single visit to the county clerk.
How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?
Voters who choose to vote absentee by mail should allow sufficient time for the ballot to be sent out by the county clerk, completed, and returned to the clerk
by the Election Day deadline. Ballots that are sent out through the mail must be competed and returned to the county clerk by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day (completed ballots may either be mailed or hand
delivered to the county clerk).
Other Information on Absentee Voting in New Mexico
In addition to absentee voting, New
Mexico offers early voting. Voters may cast their ballot on a voting machine at the county clerk's office no earlier than 20 days prior to an election and no later than the Thursday before the election.
