NORTH DAKOTA ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Who Can Absentee Vote in North Dakota?
Absentee ballots may be made available to those who:
1. Are qualified electors wishing to vote absentee prior to the date of the
election; or 2. Are members of the armed forces of the United States; or 3. Are members of the merchant marine; or 4. Are physically disabled.
Changes to the law made during the 1997
Legislative Session eliminated the requirement that qualified electors be absent from their voting precinct on election day in order to vote absentee. Therefore, qualified electors are no longer required
to provide a reason for voting absentee.
How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?
Those interested in absentee voting must
apply for an absentee voter's ballot on a sheet furnished by the proper officer of the county, city, or school district which the applicant is a voter, or in a letter containing the following
information: - The applicant's name; - The applicant's voting address; - The applicant's mailing address; - The applicant's current home telephone number;
- The election for which the ballot is being requested; - The date of the request; - An affirmation that the applicant has resided in the precinct for at least thirty days;
- The applicant's signature.
Applications may be mailed, faxed, or hand-delivered to the appropriate office (voters should contact their county election office to learn where to send the
application). Application for absentee ballots may be made at anytime throughout the year, but ballots will not be issued on the day of the election.
How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?
Absentee ballots must be mailed to the county auditor or appropriate election official and must be post marked the day before the election in order to be counted.
