Must register to vote by 5:00 PM on the 4th Wednesday before the election.

Who Can Absentee Vote in Missouri?

A registered voter may vote absentee if he/she meets one of the following criteria:

1. Voter will be out of town; or
2. Voter is ill or disabled; or
3. Voter will be serving as an election judge; or
4. Voter is on active duty with the military; or
5. Voter is prevented by religious beliefs from going to the polls on election day; or
6. Voter is incarcerated (may vote providing that all qualifications for voting are retained).

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

To vote absentee by mail, a voter should write to the Board of Election Commissioners or County Clerk's office requesting a ballot. The following information should be included:

- Applicant's birth date
- Applicant's address where he/she is registered
- Applicant's name as registered
- The address to which the ballot should be sent
- The date of the election for which the applicant is requesting a ballot
- The reason the applicant needs to vote absentee
- If it is primary election, which party's ballot the applicant wants
- The signatures of everyone in the household needing a ballot

A voter may have a close relative apply in person on his/her behalf to request a ballot. Requests for absentee ballots can be made as early as 70 days before an election. The deadline for requesting a mailed ballot is 5:00 p.m. the Wednesday before the election.

To vote absentee in person, a voter should go to the Board of Election or County Clerk's office during regular office hours as early as 42 days before the election. Some offices have extended hours or are open on Saturday close to an election. The deadline for absentee voting in person is 5:00 p.m. the day before the election.

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

Completed ballots must be returned by mail or in person to the election board before 7:00 p.m. on election day.

Absentee ballots must be notarized except for voters meeting one of the following criteria:
- Active duty military personnel and members of their immediate family living with them
- Any Missouri citizen residing outside the United States
- Persons who are physically disabled or who are ill
- Voters hospitalized after the Wednesday prior to the election may call their Board of Elections or County Clerk for an absentee ballot or to make special arrangements.
