MONTANA ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Who Can Absentee Vote in Montana?

A registered voter may opt to vote by absentee ballot if he/she meets one of the following criteria:

1. Voter expects to be absent from the county in which his/her voting precinct is situated; or
2. Voter is in the United States Service; or
3. Voter will be unable to go to the polls because of physical incapacity.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

Ballots will be available as early as 45 days prior to the election. Those interested in voting by absentee ballot should apply to the Election Administrator for an absentee ballot. Applications will be accepted as early as 75 days before the election. If applying to absentee vote by mail, voters should allow enough time for the ballot to be sent out by the election administrator's office and returned to that office no later than election day.

The elector may request the application by mail, over the phone, in person, or he/she may download it from http://www.state.mt.us/sos/elect/absent.htm. A voter may also apply by submitting a written request to the Election Administrator. The application may be submitted by mail or delivered in person to the election administrator. Voters must apply for each election separately.

If a voter chooses to vote absentee in person, he/she may vote as soon as ballots are available (45 days before the election) and no later than noon the day before the election. In-person absentee voting allows for applying and voting in the same visit to the Election Administrator.

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

They must be completed and either hand-delivered or mailed to the Election Administrator no later than the close of polls on Election Day.
