MICHIGAN ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Who Can Absentee Vote in Michigan?
A voter may vote by mail by absentee ballot if he/she: 1. Cannot vote without help; or
2. Is age 60 or older; or 3. Plans to be away from his/her city or township on election day; or 4. Is in jail, waiting for arraignment or trial; or 5. Will be working as a precinct
inspector in a precinct other than where he/she is registered; or 6. Can't go to the polls because of religious beliefs.
How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?
Those wishing to vote by absentee ballot should write to the city or township clerk. A reason for requesting an absentee ballot must be provided and the request
must be signed. This request must be received by 2 p.m. the Saturday before the election. If a voter is allowed to vote by absentee ballot, he/she may also choose to vote in person at the clerk's office
anytime up to 4 p.m. the day before the election.
Voters must ask for a new absentee ballot for each election. Those who know before the primary that they won't be able to vote in person at the
general election can request an absentee ballot for both of these elections at the same time.
How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?
All absentee ballots must be hand-delivered or mailed to the clerk's office. In order to be counted, the ballots must be received by 8:00 p.m. on election day.
Other Information on Absentee Voting in Michigan
A voter may be able to get an emergency absentee ballot if he/she has to be away on
election day because of a family death or illness. A voter may also get one if he/she can't go to the polls because of sickness or an accident. The emergency must occur too late for the voter to ask for
a regular absentee ballot. A friend of the voter can bring a written request for an emergency absentee ballot to the clerk's office before 4 p.m. on election day. Emergency ballots must be returned by
8:00 p.m. on election day.
