Who Can Absentee Vote in Iowa?

A registered voter may vote by absentee ballot if one or more of the following circumstances applies:

1. Voter expects to be absent from his/her precinct on election day during the time the polls will be open.
2. Through illness or physical disability, voter expects to be prevented from going to the polls.
3. Voter expects to be unable to go to the polls and vote on election day.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

An application for an absentee ballot must be in writing and must include:

- Voter's signature.
- The address where the voter lives. If the voter has moved from the address where he/she is registered to vote, that must be noted that on the application.
- The address to which the ballot is to be mailed, if different from voter's residence address.
- The name or date of the election.

Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the County Auditor no later than the day before an election. Absentee ballot applications may be submitted by fax if the original is also sent. However, the ballots themselves may not be sent by fax.

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

Absentee ballots need not be witnessed or notarized.

Voted absentee ballots may be returned in person by the voter or the voter's designee to the office of the County Auditor where the ballot was obtained. Ballots must be returned no later than the time the polls close for that election.

Voted absentee ballots may also be returned by mail. Ballots must be postmarked no later than the day before the election and received by the County Auditor no later than noon on the Monday following the primary election, general election, and most other elections. The deadline is earlier for school elections and elections for cities with runoff provisions.

Other Information on Absentee Voting in Iowa

Special provisions are made for voters who are members of the U.S. armed forces, who are overseas, or who are patients in hospitals or other health care facilities. Voters should contact their County Auditor or the Secretary of State for more information.

If the voter is a resident of a health care facility or hospital in the same county where he/she is registered, the voter may apply in writing as described above, and a ballot will be delivered by a special bipartisan team of election officials. The ballot will also be returned to the Auditor's office for the voter.
