CALIFORNIA ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Who Can Absentee Vote in California?

Any registered voter may vote by absentee ballot; there is no need to state a reason.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

A voter may apply for an absentee voter ballot within 60 days of the election by writing a letter to the registrar of voters or county clerk. Instructions can also be downloaded from the California Secretary of State's website (www.ss.ca.gov). A special online function exists to automatically create a letter requesting an absentee ballot for any of the 50 states (www.xballot.org).

Any mailed request for an absentee ballot must be received no less than 7 days prior to the election. The following information must be included:
- Applicant's registered address
- The address to which the absentee voter ballot is to be sent.
- Applicant's written signature (as registered)

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

The ballot can be mailed to the Registrar of Voters or delivered in person to any county polling place no later than 8:00 p.m. on election day. If illness or a physical disability prevents the voter from returning his/her ballot in person, that voter may designate a close relative to return the ballot to the polling place.

Other Information on Absentee Voting in California

Emergency absentee ballots can be issued in the week before the election in case of sudden illness or disability or a need to be absent from the precinct. You may also apply for permanent absentee ballot status if your condition requires it.
