SpeakOut.com Instant Viewer Response Results:
Kennedys, Bradley Rate Higher Than Clinton With Swing Voters

LOS ANGELES, CA - Tuesday, August 15, 2000 -Tonight was billed as “liberal night” at the Democratic convention, but Sen. Bill Bradley, Sen. Edward Kennedy and his niece Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg all received higher ratings from Independents and undecided voters than did President Clinton Monday night.

Independents and undecided voters generally gave the three speakers’ scores in the positive range-scores above 50--while these all important swing voters rarely gave President Clinton more than neutral ratings.

“Bill Clinton has replaced Ted Kennedy as the lighting rod of the Democratic party,” said Will Feltus, pollster for SpeakOut.com.

Asked which of the three speakers got their highest ratings, 83% of Republican participants and 45% of Independents chose Schlossberg. Among Democrats, Senators Bradley and Kennedy were tied with 38% naming each as their favorite speaker.

The least partisan speaker of the evening, Schlossberg, received generally high ratings, with Independents rating her comments about her father, John F. Kennedy’s New Frontier legacy higher even than Democrats. Schlossberg’s average ratings were in the high 50s and 60’s throughout her presentation, with the biggest split between Democrats and Republicans occurring when she spoke of her support for Al Gore.

Sen. Kennedy consistently received ratings in the 80’s from Democrats, with the biggest split between the two parties occurring when he criticized Republicans for their positions on healthcare.

Independents and undecided voters rated Kennedy’s comments about Gore’s choice of Lieberman even higher than Democrats and even Republicans gave him high scores for his comment that the choice of Lieberman had broken “the bigotry barrier.”

Bradley also got consistent ratings in the 80s from Democrats, with the biggest split between the two parties occurring when he raised the torch of campaign finance reform, criticizing the “secret maneuverings of powerful groups.”

Some of the highest marks from Independents of the evening came when Bradley called on Americans to raise their goals in these times of “unprecedented prosperity.”

More than 400 Americans participated online in rating tonight’s speakers using a dial indicating the numbers zero to 100 to express their agreement or disagreement with each speaker, moment by moment.

About the MSNBC/SpeakOut.com Viewer Response Room: The results of this poll reflect the average opinions of convention watchers who choose to participate in the online, Internet research project. Participants watched the live broadcast of convention proceedings and registered their moment-to-moment reactions using a 0-to-100 scale where zero indicated a very unfavorable reaction, and 100 indicated a very favorable reaction. Although the participants in the Viewer Response Room are not a scientific sample of all American voters, the average results were weighted to reflect the national party identification and gender of all voters.
