Press Releases | In the News | Media Contact Info Press Release SpeakOut.com Instant Viewer Response Results: LOS ANGELES, CA - Monday, August 15, 2000 - The aggregated results of more than 1,100 online viewers’ opinions clearly show that President Clinton’s swan song tonight was “adored by Democrats and detested by Republicans,” according to Democratic pollster Peter Hart. Tabulated results of SpeakOut.com’s Instant Viewer Response Survey also reveal that “the man who won the presidency on the gender gap is leaving with the same high approval rating from women,” Hart added. The most stunning example of Republican ill-will toward the Clinton administration came when the president praised Hillary, eliciting a 50-point spread between Democrats and Republicans, Hart noted. Overall, Democrats kept their meters in the high 70’s and low 80’s throughout Clinton’s 42-minute speech while Republicans sentiments languished for the most part in the 20’s and never broke 40. Most significant may be the fact that undecided voters gave Clinton better than neutral marks on only five out of 35 segments of his speech. This all-important voter group ventured above the 50 mark twice when Clinton talked about economic prosperity and three more times when he spoke about improved race relations, the “momentous” presidential election ahead, and the choice of Joseph Lieberman for Vice President. This may indicate that the choice of Lieberman could help Al Gore among undecideds. Independents also gave Clinton’s speech mostly middle marks with slightly higher scores for the president’s comments on the economy, improved wages and welfare reform. Clinton’s praise for Gore’s choice of Lieberman as running mate was the only point at which men gave Clinton’s speech a higher rating than women. Otherwise, women consistently scored Clinton’s remarks higher than did men in all voting groups, particularly when the departing president spoke about healthcare issues. Tonight’s overall viewer responses reveal that Clinton’s speech, although clearly political, was scored less on the issues and more as an approval rating of his presidency, “with cheers from Democrats and sneers from Republicans,” Hart said. About the MSNBC/SpeakOut.com Viewer Response Room: The results of this poll reflect the average opinions of convention watchers who choose to participate in the online, Internet research project. Participants watched the live broadcast of convention proceedings and registered their moment-to-moment reactions using a 0-to-100 scale where zero indicated a very unfavorable reaction, and 100 indicated a very favorable reaction. Although the participants in the Viewer Response Room are not a scientific sample of all American voters, the average results were weighted to reflect the national party identification and gender of all voters.
