The results from the night’s major speeches, which were available online seconds after Senator John McCain left the podium, showed that Republicans, Democrats and Independents all agreed with the first, patriotism-focused half of McCain’s speech, but diverged as soon as his remarks became political. Detailed analysis and results to the SpeakOut.com/MSNBC Instant Viewer Response Room were posted on http://www.speakout.com/activism/msnbc/results/. MSNBC viewers were able to deliver their views on the convention speakers in real-time by logging on MSNBC.com and using SpeakOut’s patent-pending online "Ntercept™ Dial Poll" technology. Results for the 546 participants were weighted to reflect the current national averages for gender, political ideology, voting intentions, and age. According to the MSNBC/SpeakOut.com Instant Viewer Response survey, John McCain was halfway into his well-received, sixteen-minute speech before Independents and Democrats in the national television audience began hearing partisan notes. Democrats and Independents began to give McCain lower scores when he challenged the status quo. “Unless we restore the people’s sovereignty over government and reinvigorate our national purpose, then America’s best days will be behind us.” Until he delivered those words, McCain had received nearly identical high scores from Republicans, Independents, and Democrats. Reaction to McCain became even more partisan as he launched into his endorsement of George W. Bush. McCain’s scores from Democrats and Independents moved up again as he spoke of his grandfather and father, and of his vision for America’s future. The Internet data from Americans across the nation correlated directly to the moment-by-moment impressions left on the MSNBC “100 Days/1000 Voices” focus group of 45 undecided voters conduced by pollster Frank Luntz while the Internet survey was underway. Two nights into the convention, McCain’s and Powell’s speeches have received the highest overall ratings from participants in the MSNBC/SpeakOut.com Instant Viewer Response Survey. For more detailed information on the speakers tonight and Monday, go to: http://www.speakout.com/activism/msnbc/results/. ![]() About the MSNBC/SpeakOut.com Viewer Response Room: The results in this table reflect the average opinions of convention watchers who choose to participate in the on-line, Internet research project. Participants watched the live broadcast of convention proceedings and registered their moment-to-moment reactions using a 0-to-100 scale where zero indicated a very unfavorable reaction and 100 indicated a very favorable reaction. Although the participants in the Viewer Response Room are not a scientific sample of all American voters, the average results were weighted to reflect the national party identification and gender of all voters as follows:
