Local Activism Goes National with SpeakOut.com
DC Vote Partners with Activism Portal to Revolutionize Grassroots Organizing

WASHINGTON, D.C. - June 28, 2000 - SpeakOut.com, the leading non-partisan Internet activism Web site, announced a partnership with DC Vote today that for the first time will allow all residents of the District of Columbia to voice their opinion online, for or against, the issue of congressional voting representation for District residents. The activism opportunity is also open to all concerned citizens, wherever they may live, who wish to have a voice in this issue.

DC Vote will usher in the July 4, 2000 - Independence Day weekend with an online email campaign to invite Americans to visit their activism page, powered by SpeakOut.com. DC Vote’s online supporters will be asked to send out emails to their friends and families to encourage them to visit the activism site, learn about the issue, and take action. Online activists may view a brief video detailing the history and importance of the issue, and sign a petition. To help build support for the cause, visitors may send the video to other concerned citizens via e-mail, contact members of Congress, and make a donation to DC Vote. The site is accessible through www.SpeakOut.com, www.DCVote.org and directly at www.speakout.com/coop/dcvote/.

SpeakOut.com was selected by DC Vote to provide online activism tools that allow a first-ever interactive forum for citizens to learn about the merits of alternative solutions and participate in the discussion of a local issue with clear national implications. Over the Independence Day weekend, Speakout.com will host an activism center where people can read about both sides of the issue, create petitions, take surveys and contact their elected leaders for legislative action.

"On this Independence Day, we at SpeakOut.com encourage all Americans to exercise their freedom to organize and express our opinions for the causes in which we believe," said Ron Howard, Chairman and CEO of SpeakOut.com. "In the 21st century, SpeakOut and its partners will act as messengers through which local activists can take their causes national by harnessing the power of the Internet."

SpeakOut.com partners with a wide array of organizations and advocacy groups, public and private, to utilize the power of the Internet to further their activism goals. SpeakOut.com’s partners include: the Republican, Democratic and Reform Parties, the Air Force Association, American Rivers, American College of Preventive Medicine, Americans for Tax Reform, Baltimore Urban Debate League, Century Council, Criminal Justice Policy Foundation, International Dairy Foods Association, National Organization on Disability, Partnership for Prevention, Rock the Vote and the Young Hispanic Republican Association.
